The Latvian National Basketball Team is the national basketball team representing Latvia on the international arena. The team's history began in April 1924, when it played against the Estonian national team for the first time. In 1935, Latvian basketball players became European champions, beating Spain in the final with a score of 24:18. This success was achieved under the leadership of Valdemars Baumanis, who assembled a team of the best players of the time, such as Eduards Andersons and Martins Grundmanis.
The team continued to show high results in other tournaments. In 1936, the Latvian national team took part in the Olympic Games in Berlin, where, despite losses to Canada and Poland, they managed to beat Uruguay. In 1937, at the home European Championship in Riga, the Latvian team showed an excellent game, but due to an unsuccessful match against Poland, they were left out of the prize places.
The modern Latvian national basketball team also shows impressive results. In 2023, the team took 5th place at the World Championship, defeating such strong opponents as France, Spain and Lithuania.
